Bio
Pleased to meet you.
Hey, the name's Callum Muir and I'm a web developer (because I'm good at it), computing student (so I can become better) and generally an all-round geek (because it's fun).
Where I'm from.
I grew up in a small town known as Hawarden, who's only notable feature was that the school was the only secondary school in the surrounding area. Other than that, it had three shops, a dairy and a pub. The dairy closed down from lack of business and one of the shops never stayed in business long, despite multiple changes in ownership.
Where I am.
I finally escaped Hawarden for my final year of secondary school and moved to Christchurch. Which is a lovely, bustling kind of place, with a large number of shops and other things that Hawarden simply lacks. Even after the devastating earthquakes, I'm quite happy here.
My education.
My final year of school was spent at Hagley Community College. I was originally wanted to go to the Christchurch College of Computing, but that closed down the previous year. Luckily, Hagley decided to try out a programme that was similar in spirit, so I ended up going there, instead.
After graduating from the Hagley College of Computing (with merit), I went on to try for the Diploma of Information and Communications Technology at the CPIT. Unfortunately, the focus of the CPIT's teaching was a little too focused on the mundanities of everyday computing and I left only halfway through the degree.
After the CPIT, I ended up at Natcoll and completed a certificate in basic design and a diploma in web development. It was at Natcoll that I learned a lot of the stuff I use to make websites. However, I don't have as much aptitude for design as my peers, so I tend to focus on the coding side of web development over the design side.
I'm currently nearing the end of my second year studying towards a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of Canterbury. There's a lot to learn and it's not as fun as Natcoll was, but there's always more stuff that I can apply to my work.
My free time.
When I'm not studying and I'm not working, my free time tends to be spent in fairly light-weight activities. I play video games and I prefer RPGs over other games, as they tend to have a better plot.
I like to read fantasy and science-fiction, because the books have more scope. I also like my movies and TV-shows to be SF&F, for more or less the same reason. You'll not be surprised to discover that I'm a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Society at the university.
I also spend time reading webcomics and drawing. These activities are not, in fact, related. My own art is of fairly low quality and is a legacy of my time at Natcoll, while I read webcomics for more or less the same reason I read books.
